IS CHLORINE REALLY THAT HARMFUL, OR NOT?

The addition of chlorine to our drinking water began in the late1890's and had wide acceptance in the United States by 1920. Since this time there have been a number of studies that have linked exposure to chlorination in water supplies with heart disease, cancer, and other major health problems. For example, studies conducted by a journal of The National Cancer Institute in 1987 and the American Journal of Public Health in 1992 concluded that much of these effects were due to not only drinking, but also showering and bathing in chlorinated water. According to The National Cancer Institute, cancer risks for people who consume chlorinated water may be to be up to 80% higher than for people who do not. While acknowledging the need for clean public water, most experts now agree that there are some significant risks related to ingesting and absorbing chlorinated water.

I DRINK BOTTLED WATER. ISN’T THAT ENOUGH?

Bottled water is, for the most part, a self-policed industry with few if any regulations to ensure quality. A major study conducted by researchers from the State University of New York at Fredonia in early 2018 found that the world's leading brands of bottled water are contaminated with tiny plastic particles that are likely seeping in during the packaging process. Yahoo.com reported in March of 2018 that researchers tested 250 bottles of water from nine countries including Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Thailand and the United States. Plastic was identified in 93 percent of the samples, which included major name brands such as Aqua, Aquafina, Dasani, Evian, Nestle Pure Life and San Pellegrino. The plastic debris included nylon, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene, which is used to make bottle caps. In this study, 65 percent of the particles found were actually fragments and not fibers, according to one researcher involved in the study. Though bottled water may be, in some ways, better to drink than the tap, it still leaves potential health risks. Not to mention that it is much more expensive to purchase long term and is not good for the environment. Today it is estimated that only 1 in 6 bottles are being recycled.

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE A WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM?

Many people believe that untreated water coming from the tap is relatively free from contaminates, but this is simply not the case. While the water supply in the US is considered among the safest globally, it still contains contaminates that pose health risks for anyone coming in contact with them. In an attempt to control these risks and decrease contamination, chlorine is added to the water supply in order to disinfect it. The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, determines the guidelines of acceptable levels of chemicals and certain contaminants. However, not only are acceptable levels often still well within in a range that poses health risks, but the EPA only requires testing for a relatively small portion of known contaminates! This leaves a large percentage of contaminates for which there are no enforceable standards. Water treatment facilities do not filter out all contaminates which are in the water supply. Water can also pick up additional contaminates while traveling from the source to your tap! Before making it to your glass or coming out of your shower, your water travels from a natural source, flowing through the ground and into a processing center where it is treated before being dispensed to your home. While flowing on its way, water can pick up dirt, metal, chemicals, and other contaminants. Instead of relying on the EPA's Primary Standard for water, advanced water filtration systems put the standard of water purity in your hands.
