WHY WE DO IT?
Many people believe that untreated water coming from the tap is relatively free from contaminates, but this is simply not the case. While the water supply in the US is considered among the safest globally, it still contains contaminates that pose health risks for anyone coming in contact with them. In an attempt to control these risks and decrease contamination, chlorine is added to the water supply in order to disinfect it. The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, determines the guidelines of acceptable levels of chemicals and certain contaminants. However, not only are acceptable levels often still well within in a range that poses health risks, but the EPA only requires testing for a relatively small portion of known contaminates! This leaves a large percentage of contaminates for which there are no enforceable standards. Water treatment facilities do not filter out all contaminates which are in the water supply. Water can also pick up additional contaminates while traveling from the source to your tap! Before making it to your glass or coming out of your shower, your water travels from a natural source, flowing through the ground and into a processing center where it is treated before being dispensed to your home. While flowing on its way, water can pick up dirt, metal, chemicals, and other contaminants.
